Louise Stokes ties the women’s standing broad jump record.

December 30, 1930

Stokes ties the women’s standing broad jump record of 8 feet 5 ¾ inches at the Young Men’s Hebrew Association meet in Roxbury. A Malden resident and an African-American, she goes on to win numerous other track and field competitions against the best women athletes in the world, but is deprived of membership on both the 1932 and 1936 Olympic teams, presumably because of her race.
